I decided that I needed to add a new workout to my routine to help me get in better shape for summer. I already go to the gym 3 times a week. I have been known to do a 5K now and then as well (when my sister-in-law makes me). I have really bad joints and early onset arthritis so after talking to a friend that swears by yoga I decided to look into it.

Yoga

Once I looked into yoga I realized that there were certain items that are needed to insure you have a good workout.

Items Needed

Yoga Mat: When buying a yoga mat you need to take several things into account. Length, thickness and texture. Everyone is different so make sure you get one that YOU like, not one that your friend likes.

Towel: A standard hand or beach towel usually works just fine. You may want to check out yoga-specific towels. They are long so they fit the length of your mat. They are made from extra-absorbent material. You can even find yoga towels that have rubber on the bottom to prevent slippage.

Clothing: You will want comfortable, breathable clothing. Avoid wearing items that are too big or too revealing. You don’t want tops to sag and get in the way. Don’t wear clothes that are too tight or restrictive either. You want to be free to move through the positions.

Water: It’s really important to stay hydrated. For hot yoga classes, you may want an insulated bottle, to help keep your water cold during class.

Benefits of Yoga

One of the best things about yoga is that it is great for anyone and everyone! You don’t have to be “good” at it or a “professional” to enjoy yoga and get a good workout out of a class. My gym actually has kids classes as well so the kids can reap the benefits of it as well. I have found that there are so many benefits to doing yoga. Here are the benefits that I have found so far:

Physical

  • Weight Loss
  • Detoxification
  • Improved Muscle form and shape
  • Improves Joint Flexibility

Mental

  • Relieving Stress
  • Relaxing the body makes the mind relax
  • Helps with anxiety and depression

Convenience

  • Can be done anywhere
  • Can be done alone or with others
  • Free when done at home
  • Find new poses as needed just by looking online

I can be found in the hot tub or in the sauna for a few minutes after class is done. I find that it is the perfect ending for a yoga workout.
