I have four kids and the oldest is 17. Growing up I was a full time babysitter, then a day care worker and finally a nanny for a few years to a couple of really cute kids. Not to mention that I have a sister that is 10 years younger than me. So, as you can see, I have been supplying Christmas magic for hundreds of kids for a generation. During the past 25 years or so I have come across quite a few Reindeer Dust recipes. Here are my favorites. These are very easy and you probably have everything you need to make them already in your cupboard. I use recipes that do not use glitter as glitter can hurt some of our small animal friends that might decide to eat the Reindeer Food.
Reindeer Food
I am a person that has to have things that are easy to whip out and do with my 2 younger kids that still feel that during the holidays every second must be filled with joy and excitement. I know this won’t last forever so I am taking the time to enjoy it now while I can. This is one of those easy and fun activities that my girls love to do. They can make a double batch, wrap them up, and take them to all of the neighborhood kids and it still only costs me pennies to make.
We used to live in a very wooded area and every Christmas morning we would have a family of deer in our year eating the Reindeer Dust. Nothing gets more magical than that on a Christmas morning to little girls.

Magic Reindeer Dust
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 2-6 Tbsp. red colored sugar
- 2-6 Tbsp. green colored sugar
- small cellophane bags
- ribbon
- Mix together all ingredients.
- Scoop the mixture evenly into small cellophane bags.
- Tie with a bow.
You can attach this saying on a tag to the cellophane bags:
Sprinkle this reindeer food outside tonight.
The moonlight will make it sparkle bright.
As the reindeer fly and roam.
This will guide them to your home.
I know this is a very easy activity and it really only takes a few minutes but the fun comes on Christmas eve when the kids go out to the yard and sprinkle the Reindeer Food.
