Travel Safety Tips for Teens
  • Check in with parents: Require specific check in times for calls. This helps parental stress but also adds a layer of safety.
  • Buddy system: Don’t ever head out alone. This sounds obvious, I know. But even if you are headed to the laundry room take a buddy.
  • Cash/Valuables: Keep cash and valuables in the safe at your hotel. NOT in your suitcase.
  • Detailed itinerary: Leave an itinerary including hotel names, phone numbers, addresses, and dates of travel from location to location.
  • Stay in populated areas: Don’t visit or hang out in areas without a lot of people. For safety, stay in lively public areas.
  • Medical information: Travel with a list of medical information (parent and medical information), blood type, medications, medical conditions, and allergies.
  • Laws of destination: In many places ignorance is not an excuse for breaking the law. Be sure to know what is and is not acceptable wherever you go – inside and outside of the US. Be respectful anywhere you go.
  • Drugs & alcohol: Drug and alcohol use can lead to serious safety risks. Be sure to speak to your teens about what is acceptable/not acceptable.
  • Food/Drinks: NEVER accept food or drinks from someone you don’t know. You never know what has been added without your knowledge.
  • Stranger danger: They have had this one crammed into them since they born so this is nothing new. Obviously, only take a ride from a taxi or Uber/Lyft driver in a clearly marked car. Don’t reveal personal information. Be aware of the risks of people trying to follow & pickpocket you, or trying to get you alone.
