Some people do yoga.
Some people run. For fun. (I do not.)
Some people hit the gym everyday and use the treadmill, bike, elliptical, and weight machines. I have always been one of those people. I do yoga for a while, get bored. I will go to the gym for a while, get bored. I get into workout videos at home for a while, get bored. I need to enjoy the workout or I am not going to do it. I also get bored with workout easily, and if I am bored I will stop doing them. For me a fresh, new, fun exercise will keep me going for a while. It also helps when the workout doesn’t feel like a workout.
So when I was invited to go to a local pole dance place I was all in! I love trying new things, and I always wondered about pole classes. How good of a workout could it actually be? Was it even a workout?
We (Katie from Adventures By Katie) and I showed up to meet a few other ladies at Aradia Fitness in Manassas, VA. We met our extremely fun teacher Melissa for our class. They actually have two beautiful studios in Northern VA. We went to the Manassas studio that is conveniently located on Liberia Avenue (just upstairs in the same building as Gold’s Gym). The brand new Ashburn studio, which is actually much closer to my house, is located on Gordon Park Square.
The classes are set up for women of all ages, shapes and fitness levels. They offer beginner through advanced pole dance classes, Aerial Yoga, and several off-the-pole classes such as Ballet Buns Vertical Barre and Deep Stretch.
We started with the “Pole Basics” class which is a great introduction to the Aradia program. Melissa was so personable and made us all feel very comfortable. By the end of the class she had everyone off the floor and doing spins on the pole (even the very timid ladies were having a great time).
Melissa put together a short routine for all of us to do. We had such a good time talking, laughing, and getting to know each other it did not even feel like a workout. Spinning is the absolute best! I learned two spins and had a great time doing them over and over. When we were stretching at the end I was having such a great time that I did not even realize that an hour and a half had come and gone or that I had gotten a great workout! By the time I went to bed that night my arms and thighs had that “good sore” feeling of a great workout.
If you are looking for a new workout or just something to add in from time to time you should look into this!

October 9, 2014 11:06My first class I broke down in tears. I took a level 1 course so there was no routine. All it was were tricks and spins. My hands are so small and I was so nervous (sweaty) that I couldn’t get a grip on the pole AT ALL! I was so frustrated I ended up leaving the class in tears. I worked up the courage to go back the next week and haven’t stopped since. If you check out my blog you’ll see the newest trick I learned, the scorpion. I was so hype last night when I nailed it. Keep it up! <3 Love.

October 1, 2014 15:26I would totally try this! I’m a HIIT-in-my-living room kinda gal, but I think this could really open me up since I tend toward the timid side sometimes…

October 9, 2014 15:27I like to workout in my living room too but getting out and trying something different keeps me going. I get bored so easily!
